Reverb 22 – Travel

December 22 – Travel
How did you travel in 2010? How and/or where would you like to travel next year?
(Author: Tara Hunt)

Well, Tara, there hasn’t been any travel this year. And you know what? I’ve been pretty happy about it for a change. Who’da thunkit?

A few years ago, when I was working at The Loneliest Planet, the only thing on my mind was travelling. I mean, I was surrounded by travellers of all sorts – grey nomads, globetrotters, the lot.

And off I went to Burma, the strangest travel so far.

Last year and the year before, JJ and I traipsed to the US, following the golden arches, the long lonely desert roads, and a couple of bands tothe Hollywood Bowl (Radiohead in 2008 and Depeche Mode in 2009). The American dream, really, for Australians.

Radiohead (no-so-great tickets) and Depeche Mode (7th row!)

But this year, with the country estate over at Hepburn Springs, my travel bug has been pretty much cured. The house is now renovated, but it’s really just a wee shack, of sorts, even if it does have new carpet and a shiny new bathroom and stainless steel stove. Whatevs, throwing a log on the fire is akin to stoking the arm of a slot machine. Primping the wisteria is like flitting through the Villa Borghese, and getting the paper at the General Store reminds me of Byron Bay (although I’ve never been, but it’d be just like that, what with the hippies and all).

It’s our weekly tree-change.

But that’s not to say that all travel is over. We’ve been invited to Barcelona next year for a friend’s 50th.

Ole!
